Malaysia SST Invoice Guide (Sales Tax vs Service Tax)

· · Reviewed by NestInvoice editorial team

Malaysia uses Sales and Service Tax (SST), not GST. Treating every bill like a Singapore GST invoice is a common mistake. Name the tax correctly, show TIN/SST ID when clients expect it, and remember a browser PDF is not the same as a MyInvois e-Invoice. Confirm whether Sales Tax or Service Tax applies before you lock the rate — use the hub /my.

SST vs GST

Whether Sales Tax or Service Tax applies depends on the supply. Our Malaysia generator often starts with an 8% service-tax style default in MYR — rename the tax line for Sales Tax when needed.

Do not paste Singapore GST rates onto a Malaysian SST invoice. Neighbour structure only: Singapore GST, Thailand VAT.

Fields that matter

Unique number, date, supplier and client, description, SST when charged, total due — same spine as what to include.

Keep net/SST/gross easy to read so finance teams can post the bill without guessing.

PDF vs MyInvois

A clear PDF helps the client pay. It does not replace MyInvois when LHDN rules require e-Invoice. When the buyer needs the official structured document, treat this tool as a draft or annex.

Using the free generator

Open /my or the SST generator. Add SST ID or TIN under From, adjust Taxes, download PDF.

Steps: how to create an invoice. Overview: VAT on invoices.

  • Use No SST if the supply is not taxable under SST
  • Rename the label to Sales Tax or Service Tax as needed
  • Generator helper only — not MyInvois software

Disclaimer

Frequently asked questions

Is SST the same as GST?

No. Malaysia’s SST framework differs from GST regimes (e.g. Singapore). Confirm whether Sales Tax or Service Tax applies to your supply.

Does this tool submit MyInvois?

No. It helps you format a clear PDF. Official e-Invoice flows stay on MyInvois / LHDN channels when required.

Same as Singapore GST or Thailand VAT?

No. Malaysia has its own SST rules and MYR. Use [/my](/my), not only an SG or TH generator.

Where do I put TIN / SST ID?

Under From when clients expect it. Add the client ID when required.

Quote or invoice?

A quote is a proposal. The invoice is the payment request — keep them separate in your records.
